About the Filmmaker

Giovana Olmos was born in Mexico City in 1995. She immigrated to Montreal in 2006. Her work earned her a merit scholarship when she was admitted to the film production program at Concordia University. During her studies, she received several production grants. Her first film, Mapou (2015), was screened in North American LGBT film festivals. Her second short, Silvia in the Waves (2017) is still circulating in festivals with a record of more than 40 selections, a world premiere at the Festival international du film Indépendant de Bordeaux and many acknowledgments, including a merit awarded by the Chicago Int’l Film Festival’s CineYouth Film Fest. While her first titles embrace the tradition of magical realism, Giovana shot Dulce Hogar (Sweet Tooth, 2018), her first horror film in Mexico City, in line with the spirit of experimentation of guerrilla filmmaking. The dystopian narrative resulting from this exercise began its festival career at Fantasia.

Since 2014, Giovana participates in the organization of Montreal’s LGBT + Afro film festival Massimadi, a cultural platform of equal relevance in her city as in Europe.
